Storm Update: Many Senior Care Facilities ... - Senior Living

By Michelle Seitzer / Posted on 30 October 2012

The past 48 hours have kept East Coast residents on their toes, with mandatory evacuations, power outages, high winds, downed trees, flash flooding, electrical fires, and a number of other issues caused by Hurricane Sandy. The stormy weather has prompted a number of senior care facilities ? nursing homes, assisted living communities, independent living apartments, and more ? to put their disaster plans into practice to keep staff and residents safe.

This article from McKnight?s Long-Term Care News gives an update on a few of the facilities in areas hit hardest. Per the piece, ?about 900 residents evacuated?in New Jersey? where about 80% of Atlantic City was underwater yesterday morning.

In New York, Long Island area nursing home residents were moved to safety in Nassau County. Residents were also evacuated in Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Also mentioned in the piece was Joe DeMattos, president of the Health Facilities Association of Maryland. Said DeMattos, ?In such an emergency, the place for professional caregivers is with their residents and patients, and people with their families.? He also encouraged all assisted living and skilled nursing care providers to review and update their disaster plans as needed.

Our recent #ElderCareChat on emergency preparedness was certainly timely in light of the recent weather; regardless of where you live, check out our recap post for tips and insights on creating an emergency plan for your family and workplace.

Climate and cost concerns mount in wake of "superstorm"

WASHINGTON, Oct 31 (Reuters Point Carbon) - Monday's mammoth storm that caused severe flooding, damage and fatalities to the eastern U.S. will raise pressure on Congress and the next president to address the impacts of climate change as the price tag for extreme weather disasters escalates.

Hurricane Sandy devastated the east coast of the United States, claiming dozens of lives so far, cutting power to over 8 million people and damaging major roadways, buildings and infrastructure, such as New York's 108-year old subway system.

Eqecat, one of the three primary firms used by the insurance industry to calculate disaster exposures, said Sandy could cause anywhere from $5 billion to $10 billion in insured losses and from $10 billion to $20 billion in economic losses, Reuters reported.

This would outdo the roughly $4.5 billion in insured losses caused by last year's Hurricane Irene, which also hit the northeast.

Sharlene Leurig, senior manager for insurance and water programs at Ceres, warned that in addition to the physical damage caused by Monday's storm, there would also be damage "on the balance sheet of taxpayers in the U.S.," raising pressure on Congress to take action on climate change.

"The sort of storm we just saw is likely to be more common in some of the most populated and valuable areas of the country," she said.

She said the government's national flood insurance program (NFIP) is already in nearly $20 billion in debt since 2005's Hurricane Katrina and would likely cost taxpayers more as such storms become more frequent.

Some taxpayer groups have called on Congress to further reform the flood insurance program and said that reinsurance companies are better positioned to absorb the costs and risks related to extreme weather occurrences.

"It appears likely that Sandy will exhaust the NFIP's remaining $3 billion of statutory borrowing authority, meaning it will need to request more money from Congress to pay its claims," said R.J. Lehmann, a senior fellow at free market policy research group R Street.

The R Street Institute is the insurance spinoff of the Heartland Institute, a group which has funded several high-profile campaigns questioning manmade climate change, but Lehmann has said the group does not promote "climate skepticism."

"In the short term, we would insist the NFIP use its existing authority to raise rates, buy reinsurance and issue catastrophe bonds, so that the private market, rather than taxpayers, assume the risk of these sorts of catastrophes in the future.

Sustainablity-focused investor group Ceres said that while 2012 private insured losses were lower so far this year than last year, when floods, heat waves, tornadoes and other extreme weather events gripped the U.S., total economic losses are likely to be significant.

On top of Hurricane Sandy, this year's drought alone is expected to cost insurers $20 billion, with most of those costs being shouldered by the federal crop insurance program.

"This storm, taken into consideration alongside one of the most economically damaging droughts in the last century, alongside wildfires that reached catastrophic proportions in the west? really point to the need for members of Congress to start taking seriously the reality that climate change is already upon us," said Leurig.

Environmental groups and some political analysts said the exclusion of the climate change issue in this year's presidential and vice presidential debates was a missed opportunity to bring the issue back into the national debate.

Although the House of Representatives passed a comprehensive climate change bill in 2009, similar efforts failed in the Senate.

The issue became a taboo subject after the Tea Party and some stiffly opposed Republicans ramped up efforts to derail climate legislation and regulatory programs to slash greenhouse gas emissions.

Jennifer Morgan and Kevin Kennedy of the World Resources Institute, wrote in a blog post Tuesday that the silence on climate change on the campaign trail was "extremely troubling" given the recent spate of extreme weather events and their economic impacts.

"We need our elected officials to break their silence on climate change. Whether climate change comes up in the final days of the campaign or not, the next president and Congress will need to step up and do more on this issue," they wrote.

Former President Bill Clinton, who has been campaigning on President Barack Obama's behalf, took aim at a quip made by Republican challenger Mitt Romney at the Republican convention that the president cared more about the rise of ocean levels than families.

At a campaign speech in Minnesota on Tuesday, Clinton addressed the climate impacts of Hurricane Sandy.

"All up and down the East Coast, there are mayors, many of them Republicans, who are being told, ?You've got to move these houses back away from the ocean. You've got to lift them up," he told the crowd.

"Climate change is going to raise the water levels on a permanent basis. If you want your town insured, you have to do this," Clinton said.

AKT Blemmebeya music review by BrufordFreak

5 stars An album of amazingly diverse sound and styles, from true symphonic RPI structures to world, new age, jazz, folk, psychedelia and many other forms.

1. "Prima Della Fine" (1:13) starts the album off with a recording of a GEORGE CARLIN rant on politics. Amazing! What a way to start an album! YES! A group with some guts! (10/10)

2. "L'assalto" (9:56) gets the music off to a very, very powerful start--great melodies coming from all instruments, weaving in and out of each other's paths in a beautiful and never overwhelming the listener with "too many notes." At 2:30 male vocals enter, causing the tapestry to be less attention getters--for a while. The vocalist timbre and style is remarkably similar to that of Quebec's THE BOX lead singer, JEAN-MARC PISAPIA. This song has so many twists and turns it's like a maze, yet it never loses the listener, each turn is easy and acceptable. (9/10)

3. "TG Egeo" (5:10) is a great song very much in the RPI tradition, sounding a lot like BANCO DEL MUTUO SUCCORSO from the 1970s. Cool Frippertronics at the end. (9/10)

4. "Favonio" (4:55) begins with acoustic guitar and male vocals--first one then harmonized others. Sensitive, kind of like a great JOHN DENVER song. Piano, double bass, and brushed drums join in for the next section before an awesome guitar riff pulls in mellotron, electric bass, and full drum kit. Yes' or Genesis' best 'surprise' moments never topped this one! And then it just gets better with another shift at 3:30 whereupon an electric guitar--with bass mirroring and harmonizing it--plays an amazing solo to the end. (10/10)

5. "Stati D'animo Uniti" (5:50) starts with some ominous, deep bass sounds with flits and splffs of percussion and other distorted instruments and samples creating a heavy, oppressive feel into which an equally dismal feeling vocal enters. The music and 'noises' plod ominously along, until at 2:35 a brief flourish of tango-like Latin music rushes through the room before, then, just as quickly disappearing to allow the vocalist to carry forward his depressing message (in Italian). The upbeat Latin section returns, establishes some lasting footing, then kind of backs off for a very ALLAN HOLDSWORTH-like guitar solo to play. The song ends with the Latin flourish, leaving the listener quite confused but entertained. Those Italians! They're so dramatic! (8/10)

6. "Di Vento" (10:17) again starts off with a feel and sound extremely similar to several of the kind-of-monotone songs on THE BOX's 2009 album D'Apr?s le horla de Maupassant. This similarity continues throughout the song. Musically there are builds and lulls that are quite reminiscent of the wind. A nice song that seems to want to really build and break out, and threatens to do so several times in a "Cinema Show"-like way, but doesn't really do this until the end of the eighth minute. Still, a satisfying climax, d?noument and finale. (9/10)

7. "Mani Aperte" (4:55) starts off with clapping like PAT METHENY's "First Circle" before evolving into an enigmatic, chameleonic song, melding together some amazingly disparate sounds, instruments, and themes in a rather STEVE TIBBETTS kind of way. Even the guitar solo sounds like its straight out of Yr or another of Tibbets' 80s/90s releases. Then--surprise, surprise--at 3:20 an electric guitar slow strum that just brings everybody into pure prog melodic bliss--and which plays out, with male vocals/lyrics at the very end. (9/10)

8. "Zeitgeist" (3:44) is an instrumental that begins with another ominous, yet beautiful and engaging groove with still more odd and unusual sounds coming from stringed and keyed instruments. (9/10)

9. "La Fine" (5:27) begins with a muffled/treated male vocal backed by bass, far-back keyboard chords and very subtle cymbol play. By mid second minute the intensity and volume of still-slow drum work and vocal are increasing. A nice acoustic nylon string guitar solo in the middle carries the mood forward until a glockenspiel and some television sound samples take over for a bit, over which the voice returns in his treated whisper, before the volumes elevate again for the fifth minute. The final thirty seconds is kind of time echoing away. (8/10)

An album of amazingly diverse sound and styles, from true symphonic RPI structures to world, new age, jazz, folk, psychedelia and many other forms. The only negative comment I might have about this album revolve around the lead vocalist's monotonic singing style: it often seems to weigh down the song, even preventing it from developing more dynamic diversity. Still, this is in my opinion nothing less than a masterpiece of progressive rock music. 5 stars.

(As of 9/24/12 Blemmebeya sits at #167 on my list of All-time Favorite Albums.)

Delegates Focus on Variety of Internal AAFP Issues During ...

Although the Reference Committees on Organization and Finance and Education had short lists of resolutions to work through, delegates still managed to ensure there was vigorous debate on several issues.

For example, during testimony at the Reference Committee on Organization and Finance, delegates debated the wisdom of the AAFP providing funding for new physician delegates to attend the National Conference of Special Constituencies (NCSC). Joseph Gravel Jr., M.D., president of the Massachusetts AFP, noted that small chapters have limited funds to send delegates to NCSC, and he is concerned that the conference needs new blood.

AAFP member Jay Lee, M.D., of Long Beach, Calif., said such a move would provide states with some flexibility. "It helps small chapters develop a leadership pipeline," said Lee, pointing at the number of AAFP leaders who have come up via the NCSC.

Delegates agreed that the NCSC is an important pipeline for AAFP leaders and adopted the resolution as part of the consent calendar.

During the reference committee hearing delegates also debated the wisdom of allowing candidates to speak at caucus meetings during the Congress of Delegates. William Woodhouse, M.D., a delegate from Pocatello, Idaho, pointed out that the Western United States is uniquely challenged by its geography, making it difficult for members to hold their caucus anywhere but at the annual Congress of Delegates. He and other delegates were concerned that the policy prohibiting candidates from campaigning during caucuses meant many regional leaders could not participate and offer their knowledge on issues.

"This is nothing more than a gag order," said Oregon delegate Margaret Hayes, M.D., from Portland, during testimony before the Congress. We are missing important input that candidates can provide, she added.

AAFP Speaker John Meigs, M.D., of Centreville, Ala., pointed out during the Congress that he thought delegates were misinterpreting the rules. Candidates can attend caucuses and they can discuss issues, he said. But if they are asked to do a presentation as a candidate, that is something they cannot do. It does not mean they cannot address resolutions.

In the end, delegates voted to adopt an amended substitute resolution that allows candidates to discuss issues within their respective caucus meetings during the Congress of Delegates.

Participants in the Reference Committee on Education offered mixed testimony about a resolution regarding fairness in the maintenance of certification process. Board certification seems to be a moving target, said Virginia delegate Kurtis Elward, M.D., of Charlottesville. Some physicians are trying to do a good job on the certification process, he noted, but there is a lack of clarity in the process.

Alternate delegate Douglas Curran, M.D., of Athens, Texas, said the last time he took the boards it was quite a struggle. "It's become a testing opportunity rather than a learning opportunity, and we've got to make it a learning opportunity," he said.

However, John Bucholtz, D.O., a delegate from Columbus, Ga., noted that as a former member of the board of the ABFM, he knows that most FPs put recertifying off until the last minute. "Most members choose to block out communication," from the ABFM until they are ready to recertify, he said.

Members of the reference committee pointed out that staff members from the AAFP and the ABFM are forming working groups to facilitate communication between the organizations. In the end, delegates voted as part of the consent calendar to not adopt the resolution.

Best Steps to Protect Family and Computers Online During the ...

Hi-Tech Institute of Advance Technology, we?ve evolved in tune with the changing face of technology. Throughout our 6 years in the business of Mobile Repairing, Computer Hardware, Networking technology and Printer Repairing we?ve successfully trained thousand of students to overcome failure for high-paying careers.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) November 24, 2010

This is a list of 15 mostly free and low-cost things that consumers can do to protect home computers and family members on the Internet. To see this press release with active hyperlinks, go to http://www.firewallguide.com/safe-holidays-2010.htm

ISP Offers? Use free or discounted Internet security services or software offered by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). These options may include spam and virus filters for an email account, and an Internet security software suite with firewall, antivirus, and more security features. Before installing ISP software, check for online reviews.

Windows Update? Use the free Microsoft / Windows update service every second Tuesday of the month. Hackers like out of date software. Note: If it has been awhile, run update and reboot, then run it again.

Patch Auditor? Use a free application security patch auditor like Securia Online Software Inspector (OSI) at least once a month to check for security patches. For continuous coverage, download the Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI).

openDNS? Use the free openDNS service to filter everything entering your computer from the Internet. Free basic protection includes anti-phishing, anti-botnet, and more than 50 categories of web content filtering. Filter some or all, its up to the user.

Email Spam/Virus? Use email software and/or an online email service that has spam and virus filters.

Browser? Use an up-to-date Internet browser like Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3.6, Opera10.6, or Chrome 7. Be sure to use the built-in privacy and security features.

Passwords? Use a password manager like Lastpass. Can anyone remember even ten 12 digit passwords with numbers, symbols, lower and upper case letters like ^80enmfVC^6g ? A excellent password manager makes it simple.

Firewall? Use a two-way firewall. The one included in Windows is OK but one-way, incoming. There are excellent free two-way personal firewalls available like Checkpoint ZoneAlarm Firewall, Comodo Firewall Pro, Online Armor, PC Tools Firewall Plus, and PrivateFirewall.

Anti-Malware? Use anti-malware software that checks for viruses, spyware, Trojans, worms, key loggers, root kits, phishing? It may take two or more products to cover all of these threats. Top free combo choices include Panda Cloud Antivirus, avast! antivirus home edition, and Microsoft Essentials. All three include antivirus and anti-spyware features. OpenDNS (above) includes anti-phishing, anti-botnet, and web content filtering.

HD Clean Up? Remove software applications that are never used. Try PC Decrapifier and Revo Uninstaller to help remove unwanted software. For cleaning temporary files, cookies, etc., try CCleaner.

Back Up? Back up vital files. Try a free online service. Is the entire system backed up? Use a low-cost flash drive or external hard disk. Have a system repair disk? If needed, be very pleased there is one.

Retail Items

Router? Use a low-cost hardware router with built in firewalls for to use with one to four computers, wired or wireless. Be sure to get one with NAT, SPI, WAPA security features.

Broadband? Get Internet service quicker than dial-up (cable, dsl, etc.). Keeping a computer secure entails a lot of downloading of patches, updates, and utility software.

Windows Upgrade? Upgrade to Windows 7. Before purchasing, run the Microsoft upgrade advisor to see if it will work on your computer. Windows 7 is better accepted than Vista and much more secure than Windows XP.

Security Suite? An Internet security software suite can include a two-way firewall, anti-malware, anti-spam and more features in a single product. Top rated ones are available from Norton, Kaspersky, PC Tools, Webroot, ZoneAlarm and others. These products are not free.

Vital Tips

Remove Ancient Software. To avoid problems, remove ancient security software before installing new security software even if the two products are from the same vendor. The free AppRemover utility enables the thorough uninstallation of security applications.

Just One, Not Two. To prevent problems, do not use two software firewalls or anti-malware products at the same time (unless the vendors say it is OK).

'Paranormal Activity 4' wears out welcome

Paramount Pictures

By Justin Love, The Hollywood Reporter

REVIEW: Mockumentary filmmakers Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman ("Catfish") know a thing or two about misdirecting an audience, as they proved again with 2011?s "Paranormal Activity 3." Together with returning screenwriter Christopher Landon, this time around they seem short on new ideas, however, relying more on the series? reputation for low-budget thrills to attract audiences. Regardless, by now Paramount?s franchise is a brand unto itself, and it?s unlikely that anything will stop the first few waves of fans boosting "Paranormal Activity 4" up the chart until at least through Halloween.

Quickly recapping with flashbacks and documentary-style introductory cards the conclusion of "Paranormal Activity 2," when in a prequel to 2007?s original film Katie (Katie Featherston) killed her sister Kristi (Sprague Grayden) and abducted her nephew Hunter (William Juan Prieto), the current version jumps ahead to 2011, relocating the action from California to Nevada and introducing an entirely new family. Teenager Alex (Kathryn Newton), her 6-year-old brother Wyatt (Aiden Lovekamp) and their parents (Stephen Dunham and Alexondra Lee) live a typical middle-class suburban life, even if they think their neighbors across the street -- single mother Katie and her young son Robbie (Brady Allen) -- are a bit of an odd pair.

After Katie is unexpectedly and mysteriously admitted to the hospital for some unknown illness, Alex?s mom inexplicably offers to take Robbie in while his mother is recovering. Alex soon begins to notice strange events coincident with Robbie?s arrival, while the young visitor?s insinuations increasingly draw Wyatt away from her. Other family members also begin to clue into the strange goings-on, with mysterious sounds, shifting furniture and alarmingly animated household objects suggesting something is seriously amiss.

With the help of her boyfriend Ben (Matt Shively), Alex sets up the family?s home video cameras and laptops to record Robbie?s late-night wanderings and vaguely sinister activities around the house. As Alex becomes more convinced that some evil presence is seeking her out, the mysterious forces behind Robbie?s visit become more assertive, squarely threatening the family?s survival while inexorably tracking back to the earlier abduction of Hunter.

By now the basis of the "Paranormal Activity" franchise, concerning Katie?s possession by a demonic force that results in a series of malevolently haunted houses, is well-known to those who care to follow each new iteration. The fourth installment adds very little new information while playing out the inevitably unpleasant outcomes that await the characters, preferring to recycle plot elements from previous films.

Fairly mild in tone and riffing -- if not quite ripping -- off a collection of horror classics that includes "The Shining," "Rosemary?s Baby" and "Poltergeist," both the franchise?s premise and its execution nevertheless remain rudimentary, with the narrative and character backstories representing more of a sketch than a fully realized vision of the supernatural world that Katie inhabits.

Although Newton and Shively are likable enough in their roles as the sleuthing teens, the other performances remain perfunctory overall. Laptop webcams and camera phones are substituted for the earlier video-surveillance cams, but little has changed visually in the style of the filmmakers? alternation of static and frantic handheld shots, mixed with a surfeit of distracting closeups.

Asymmetrically framed scenes, staccato editing techniques and oppressive ambient sound (and the ominous lack of a score) are substituted for any real narrative development, leaving a plot essentially consisting of a series of setups followed by frightening payoffs. Weak attempts to introduce a smattering of satanic symbology are belatedly superfluous. It?s just such lack of creative investment that inevitably leads to further sequels, if a theatrical audience can actually be sustained going forward.

Google's Q3 2012 earnings: $14.10 billion in revenue, $2.74 billion in operating income

Google's Q3 2012 earnings $1410 billion in revenue, $274 billion in operating income

In an apparent error, Google's Q3 2012 earnings have gone live smack dab in the middle of the trading day, instead of after the closing bell as expected. Early indications are that the search giant has notched third quarter revenues of $14.10 billion, representing a 45 percent uptick compared to Q3 2011. GAAP operating income in the third quarter of 2012 was $2.74 billion, or 19 percent of revenues, and that would explain the near 10 percent slide in the company's stock price. A year ago Google nailed down $3.06 billion, or 31 percent of revenues, when looking at operating profit; investors were expecting some $10.65 per share, while they got just $9.03 per share. When looking at net income, Q3 2012 saw that figure at $2.18 billion, whereas the company raked in $2.73 billion in the same quarter a year ago. Presently, trading has been halted on the company's stock as the dust settles, but one thing is exceptionally clear: pulling in billions in a single quarter won't go over well with Wall Street if its expectations see you pulling in even more.

Zoopy The Jack Russell Pet Detective The mystery of the Golden ...

Zoopy The Jack Russell Pet Detective The mystery of the Golden Bone

By?Robert Villalobos and Linda Shackelford
CreateSpace, $8.00, 110 pages
ISBN?9781475143485

Zoopy, a Jack Russell terrier, is born far more brilliant and beautiful than any other dog. Zoopy lives with Tom and Beth, two humans, on a cattle ranch in Texas. Zoopy is so smart she becomes the Head Canine in Charge and rules the ranch. She is able to converse with all beings, she understands everything, and learns from watching television ? shows such as Boston Legal and Dancing with the Stars and Magnum P.I. Zoopy loves questions and figuring out the answers. She decides she is a detective and will solve mysteries.

?Freddy and Farty Fish grew weary of such a question; after all, Zoopy was asking them questions about one of their biggest dangers, their most terrifying nightmare.?

Good children?s stories have characters to which children can relate and, generally speaking, have children in them. This book has none. The main character is a completely unrealistic dog that fetches beer for her master and ruins the ranch, yet is treated as a hero. Animals eat cupcakes and Twinkies and such things that would ruin their health. An entire chapter is devoted to a story about aliens in order to explain why a fish is named Farty, which the authors seem to think is funny. It is not. This is a terrible example of writing for children. The best thing about it is that it is short.

Circumbinary planet in quadruple star system discovered by astronomers aided by volunteer 'Planet Hunters'

ScienceDaily (Oct. 15, 2012) ? A joint effort of citizen scientists and professional astronomers has led to the first reported case of a planet orbiting twin suns that in turn is orbited by a second distant pair of stars.

Aided by volunteers using the Planethunters.org website, a Yale-led international team of astronomers identified and confirmed discovery of the phenomenon, called a circumbinary planet in a four-star system.

Only six planets are known to orbit two stars, according to researchers, and none of these are orbited by distant stellar companions.

"Circumbinary planets are the extremes of planet formation," said Meg Schwamb of Yale, lead author of a paper about the system presented Oct. 15 at the annual meeting of the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society in Reno, Nevada. "The discovery of these systems is forcing us to go back to the drawing board to understand how such planets can assemble and evolve in these dynamically challenging environments."

Dubbed PH1, the planet was first identified by citizen scientists participating in Planet Hunters, a Yale-led program that enlists members of the public to review astronomical data from NASA's Kepler spacecraft for signs of planets. It is the project's first confirmed planet discovery.

The volunteers -- Kian Jek of San Francisco and Robert Gagliano of Cottonwood, Arizona -- spotted faint dips in light caused by the planet as it passed in front of its parent stars, a common method of finding extrasolar planets. Schwamb, a Yale postdoctoral researcher, led the team of professional astronomers that confirmed the discovery and characterized the planet, following observations from the Keck telescopes on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. PH1 is a gas giant with a radius about 6.2 times that of Earth, making it a bit bigger than Neptune.

"Planet Hunters is a symbiotic project, pairing the discovery power of the people with follow-up by a team of astronomers," said Debra Fischer, a professor of astronomy at Yale and planet expert who helped launch Planet Hunters in 2010. "This unique system might have been entirely missed if not for the sharp eyes of the public."

PH1 orbits outside the 20-day orbit of a pair of eclipsing stars that are 1.5 and 0.41 times the mass of the Sun. It revolves around its host stars roughly every 138 days. Beyond the planet's orbit at about 1000 AU (roughly 1000 times the distance between Earth and the Sun) is a second pair of stars orbiting the planetary system.

"The thousands of people who are involved with Planet Hunters are performing a valuable service," said coauthor Jerome Orosz, who earned his Ph.D. at Yale in 1996 and is now associate professor of astronomy at San Diego State University. "Many of the automated techniques used to find interesting features in the Kepler data don't always work as efficiently as we would like. The hard work of the Planet Hunters helps ensure that important discoveries are not falling through the cracks."

Gagliano, one of the two citizen scientists involved in the discovery, said he was "absolutely ecstatic to spot a small dip in the eclipsing binary star's light curve from the Kepler telescope, the signature of a potential new circumbinary planet."

He continued, "It's a great honor to be a Planet Hunter, citizen scientist, and to work hand-in-hand with professional astronomers, making a real contribution to science."

Jek expressed wonder at the possibility of the discovery: "It still continues to astonish me how we can detect, let alone glean so much information about another planet thousands of light years away just by studying the light from its parent star."

The paper is available on the arXiv preprint server and has been submitted to Astrophysical Journal. A team from Johns Hopkins University has been working on a separate paper on aspects of the planetary system.

The research was supported by NASA and the National Science Foundation Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowship.
