Samsung SCX-4835FR

The Samsung SCX-4835FR ($450 street) is the sort of unexciting monochrome laser MFP that does its job well enough, but without offering anything to make it stand out from the crowd. Like some other Samsung MFPs I've reviewed recently, including, for example, the Samsung SCX-4729FD ($250 street, 3 stars), it's slower than you'd expect from the engine rating, which is 33 pages per minute (ppm) in this case. However, it offers all the features most offices need. As long as you're not overly concerned with speed, that's enough to make it worth considering.

Aimed at the range from micro to mid-size offices, but most appropriate for micro to small offices or workgroups because of its slow speed, the SCX-4835FR ?is too big to share a desk with comfortably, at 17.6 by 18.5 by 17.2 (HWD) inches. On the other hand, it's small enough to find room for easily even in a micro office, and its Ethernet connection makes it easy to share on a network.

As you would probably expect for an office MFP, the SCX-4835FR can print and fax from, as well as scan to a PC, even over a network, and it works as a standalone copier and fax machine. In addition, it can both scan to and print from a USB memory key, and it includes a 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF) to complement the letter size flatbed, and let you scan legal-size pages. The ADF also duplexes (scans one side of the page, then turns it over to scan the other) making it easy to scan stacks of paper printed on both sides of the page.

The printer's paper handling is good enough to count as a plus, with a 250-sheet paper tray, a 50-sheet multipurpose tray for easy printing on different types of paper, and a built-in duplexer for printing on both sides of the page. For most micro and small offices this should translate to both ample capacity and welcome flexibility. For those who need more, Samsung sells an optional 520-sheet tray ($200 street) to boost the paper capacity to a total of 820 sheets.

Setup and Speed
For my tests, I installed the SCX-4835FR driver and software on a Windows Vista system, and connected the printer directly to the network. Installation was standard fare.

The printer was a lot slower than you'd expect from the 33 ppm engine speed?which should be close to the speed you'll see when printing a text file without any graphics or photos. I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at an effective 3.3 ppm.

For comparison, the SCX-4729FD , rated at 29 ppm, came in at 8.2 ppm, and the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-8480DN ($400 street, 4 stars), rated at 32 ppm, managed an effective 10.6 ppm. That makes the SCX-4835FR slow for the price and slow for the engine rating.

Output Quality
I wish I could report that the printer makes up for its slow speed with dazzling output quality. Unfortunately, however, the quality is a bit below par across the board. The good news is that even below-par text for a mono laser is more than good enough for most business needs. It's not suitable for serious desktop publishing, but for anything less demanding than that, you shouldn't have a problem with it unless you have an unusual need for small fonts.

Graphics and photo quality are both at the bottom of a tight range where the vast majority of mono laser MFPs fall. Graphics are easily good enough for any internal business need. Depending on your level of perfectionism, you may or may not consider them good enough for PowerPoint handouts or other material going to potential clients or customers. Photo quality is good enough to print recognizable photos from Web pages or the like. Whether you?d consider them suitable for, say, a client newsletter, will depend on how critical an eye you have.

All told, the Samsung SCX-4835FR offers the right set of features for most small offices, including such conveniences as the ADF and the ability to scan to and print from a USB key. It's slow, but not intolerably slow, and although the output quality isn't stellar, it's good enough for most business use. The only real issue is that it costs a lot for what it delivers. The Brother MFC-8480DN , or even Samsung's own SCX-4729FD offer better value?aka more bang per buck. But if you don't mind the price, or can find the Samsung SCX-4835FR for a sufficiently low price, it's otherwise a perfectly reasonably choice.

Israel: Iran must commit to stop all enrichment

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel on Wednesday accused Iran of stalling in negotiations over its nuclear program with the international community, and said an upcoming round of talks can succeed only if the Iranians agree to halt all uranium enrichment.

Israel is staking out a hardline stance ahead of the May 23 talks in Baghdad, where six world powers will sit down with Iranian officials in hopes of resolving the standoff. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who considers a nuclear-armed Tehran to be a mortal threat, has hinted he would order an attack on Iran if he concludes that international diplomacy and sanctions have failed.

Israel, like the West, believes Iran is trying to develop a nuclear bomb. Enriched uranium is a key ingredient in an atomic weapon, although it can also be used in energy production and for medical isotopes. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Iran held a first nuclear meeting with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany last month in Turkey. The sides hailed the meeting as a key step forward and agreed to meet again in Baghdad.

Netanyahu told the visiting EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, on Wednesday that Iran is "playing for time" with these talks, an Israeli official said.

Netanyahu said the talks will be successful only if Iran agrees to halt all uranium enrichment, ship its current stockpile of enriched uranium out of the country and dismantle an underground enrichment facility near the city of Qom. He demanded a "clear timeline" for implementation, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the meeting was closed.

Israel says a nuclear weapon in the hands of Iran would threaten the very existence of the Jewish state. It cites Iranian calls for Israel's destruction, Iran's support for anti-Israel militant groups and Iran's development of missiles capable of striking Israel.

The official would not say whether Netanyahu presented any ultimatums to Ashton.

But Israeli officials have said time is running out for military action. Defense Minister Ehud Barak has said Iran will soon enter an "immunity zone" in which military action will no longer be an option.

The United States has urged Israel to refrain from attacking, saying that international pressure must be given time to work. A new set of tough economic sanctions is set to go into effect in the coming months, and officials fear an Israeli attack could set off a regional war.

The Israeli official said Netanyahu's new deputy prime minister, Shaul Mofaz, attended Wednesday's meeting.

Mofaz, the former opposition leader, has spoken out in the past against a unilateral Israeli strike, saying any action should be coordinated with the Americans.

But now that Mofaz, an ex-military chief and defense minister, is a member of Netanyahu's inner circle, he could give the military option an influential boost of support if he changes his mind.

Apple Might Replace Your Broken iPhone 4 with an iPhone 4S [Apple]

If you bring your broken black iPhone 4 to the Apple Store, you might get a fresh iPhone 4S as your replacement phone. What?! Yep, because of supply constraints, many Apple Stores don't have any black iPhone 4 units (16GB/32GB) in stock so they have been instructed by Apple to give customers an iPhone 4S instead. More »

Quora Employee Answers ?Why I Declined An Offer To Work At Instagram? On Quora

Why I Declined Instagram and Joined QuoraHere's a heart-warming tale of why you can't second-guess yourself. Robert Cezar Matei?had the chance to work for Instagram long-before it was acquired by Facebook for $1 billion, but followed his passion for knowledge and?became the growth hacker?for question & answer site?Quora instead. This is his answer on Quora (fittingly) for why he declined Instagram, and why he's still smiling. "You make a gut call, then you walk into the future with serenity." Question - Did anyone decline an offer to work at Instagram? Answer -?Robert Cezar Matei: "Yeah, I had an offer to be the second engineering hire. Kevin?and Mike had grown the team really slowly for their entire history: they'd hired only one engineer,?Shayne, until just a few months prior to the acquisition, and they'd only made one other offer before me. Some people didn't take them seriously as a business - it was "just an app", and apps are made by hobbyists.

Sony Smartwatch SDK update adds open source music player and puzzle game extensions

Still wishing for some more functionality on Sony's touch-friendly watch? Well there's good news if you're into slider puzzles and music playing apps, as both of these have arrived open source in the SmartWatch's latest SDK. The music extension will allow devs to start work on their own music player, already including support for Android's generic music player. The 8 Game extension doesn't elaborate on what you'll be able to extend from the original image shifting puzzler, but we'll leave that up to developers' imaginations. You can get the full rub and all downloads at the source, just dial down that enthusiasm a little -- the wait for a few more features continues.

Eli Manning SNL Highlight Videos

We all knew he was killer quarterback but who knew that Eli Manning was also a freaking comedian. The first time Saturday Night Live host did an awesome job and proved there is more to him than just football. If you missed the show no worries I have some highlight videos that will make you feel like you were there. He may have felt like he was out of his element but those of us watching the show so could not tell at all. Eli killed as the host and I admit that I was a little skeptical about Manning hosting the show. Clearly though I was oh so wrong. I promised you some videos and I never disappoint my readers. Let?s kick things off with the opening monologue. Eli gives some advice on where to eat in NYC however his suggestions might surprise you. Not too bad huh! Next up was one of my favorite sketches of the night. It was called ?Little Brothers? and it features Manning as a volunteer in a Little Brothers program. It is not your typical volunteer program that is for sure. Eli took the stand in the sketch ?Text Message Evidence?. It may [...]

SpaceX software hangup delays first private launch to space station

SpaceX has announced that it is delaying its scheduled May 7 launch of the first launch of a commercial rocket to the International Space Station so that they can continue to test the software for the space capsule's docking?mechanism.

Space Exploration Technologies, a privately held firm founded and run by entrepreneur Elon Musk, is delaying its trial cargo run to the International Space Station, Musk announced Monday.

"Am pushing launch back approximately a week to do more testing on Dragon docking code. New date pending coordination with NASA," Musk said in a Twitter post.

The company, also known as SpaceX, is expected to be the first private company to fly to the $100 billion research complex, which is owned by the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada.

With the retirement of the space shuttles last year, NASA is looking to SpaceX and Orbital Sciences Corp to take over flying U.S. cargo to the space station, which orbits about 240 miles (386 km) above Earth. The companies hold combined contracts worth $3.5 billion for cargo delivery services.

Launch of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon cargo capsule on SpaceX's trial run to the station was slated for April 30, but the mission is being delayed about a week to allow more time for engineers to test software needed for the capsule's berthing at the station, Musk said in his post.

Last week, NASA cleared SpaceX for launch on April 30, pending a final review of its flight software.

The company successfully launched and recovered a test Dragon capsule in December 2010.

SpaceX is among several firms vying to develop space taxis to fly astronauts to the station as well.

More information about a new launch date for SpaceX is expected later this week.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Republican Richard Lugar has shown through a lengthy Senate career that he can broker compromises on international and domestic issues, and avoid the acrimony that often brings Washington to a halt.

It's those qualities that may end up costing the former Rhodes Scholar and Indianapolis mayor the seat he first won in 1976.

Lugar, one of the longest-serving senators, is facing perhaps his toughest GOP challenger ever in tea party-backed state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who hopes to end the incumbent's 36-year Capitol Hill career with a victory in Tuesday's primary.

Mourdock has spent months arguing that Lugar is not conservative enough for the right-leaning state, and he hopes to benefit from the split between the party's establishment and conservative wings. The challenger, aided by outside groups, also has tried to make the anti-incumbent argument, portraying Lugar as nothing more than a Washington insider.

"When Dick Lugar moved to Washington, he left behind his conservative Hoosier values," Mourdock said in a recent ad.

The attacks have taken a toll. Public polls show a close race, though internal surveys by several Republicans show Mourdock with a slight edge.

Lugar, 80, has "had his turn," said Judy Young of Brooklyn.

Lugar and his supporters have tried to turn his Washington career into an asset by arguing that his deep relationships in the capital make him best positioned to represent Indiana Republicans.

"I'm not for Dick Lugar for what he's done, but for what he can do," Gov. Mitch Daniels said in a recent campaign ad. "Our point of view gets heard and has a better chance to win out with Dick Lugar."

If Lugar loses, the seat probably will become a top target of national Democrats hoping to retain a narrow Senate majority. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said President Barack Obama's campaign and independent groups would be expected to rally behind U.S. Rep. Joe Donnelly.

That's less likely if Lugar, who's seen as a strong general election candidate because of his bipartisan record, prevails Tuesday.

Friends and foes alike say while Lugar had the backing of much of the state's establishment, including Daniels, he was slow to recognize the threat that Mourdock posed. They point to warning signs nationally from the 2010 primaries that severely divided the GOP. Tea party-supported candidates beat incumbents such as Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, and establishment hopefuls in primaries in Colorado, Delaware and elsewhere.

Lugar has given critics fodder to assail him as out of touch with Indiana and Midwestern values.

He sold his Indianapolis home in 1977, and Democrats are now using that against him. Democrats and tea partyers mocked the fact that he lived in McLean, Va., near Washington, and raised the residency issue with Indiana authorities. Lugar briefly was ruled ineligible to vote in Indiana and later was forced to change his voter registration to his family farm in Indianapolis.

He also had to pay the Senate for more than $14,000 spent on hotel stays for weekend visits to Indiana.

One Mourdock supporter, 49-year-old Alan Horton of Mooresville, asked, "How does a man who doesn't live in this state vote for himself?" Many others have the same question.

Lugar hasn't done much to woo the tea party. In fact, he blamed the tea party for keeping the Senate in Democratic hands after the 2010 elections by nominating candidates who were too conservative to win general elections in a few critical states.

He also struggled to find a message that would appeal to the tea party-infused Indiana GOP.

Initially, he focused on Obama, blaming him for not supporting construction of a Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline. Later, he turned his sights on Mourdock, attacking him as "untrustworthy" in a series of negative ads. Lugar's campaign spent at least $2.5 million on advertising to answer Mourdock's charges and cut him down. Republicans say that effort backfired because the attacks undercut Lugar's reputation as a statesman.

"Personally he's just not mean, but his campaign has been so mean that once Mourdock became quasi-credible and people listened to him, the negatives began backfiring," said former U.S. Rep. Mark Souder, who is neutral in the race.

Lugar acknowledges hiccups but insists he's pleased with his campaign's effort.

"Obviously you can always think back over things that could have been done better," Lugar said. "You never have 100 percent."

Mourdock, a former geologist and two-term treasurer, spent more than $2 million to press his message. He got help from the anti-tax Club for Growth, which has spent about $1.7 million assailing Lugar.

He has been a fixture in GOP circles for some time but had struggled to win an election until his 2006 run for treasurer. That office catapulted him into the national spotlight when he challenged the Chrysler bankruptcy in a case that reached the U.S. Supreme Court, and endeared him to tea party activists looking for a change.

He may be rewarded Tuesday.

With A Talent War In The Valley, Perhaps Romania Has The Answers?

Bucharest-capital-of-romaniaToday, in 2012, there is a talent war like no other. The Valley is abuzz with a hiring frenzy. Startups can't compete with Yammer, Zynga, Twitter, Facebook and the rest for developers. Perhaps the answer is to look elsewhere? To countries where the old Soviet education system produced maths and science graduates by the truckload? To Kiev, Belgrade, Slovenia and others? And perhaps to Romania. For Romanians, perhaps for the first time in history, the world is now flat. Forty-five years of Stalin-esque communism meant sports and education were the only acceptable ways to compete in Romania. Soviet-era industrialisation ended up producing a country where almost half of the educated population were trained to become engineers. Today, in 2012, they are more likely to be coders. And now they can take their place with the rest of the world on the level playing field of technology.

Rental Property Management | FINANCE-DEBT RELIEF

If you?re the owner of residential rental property in the Greater Vancouver area then we can be of service to you. We offer full property management services to property owners on an ongoing basis for the long term. As a result many of our clients have been with us for more than ten years.

Our primary service is rent collection. We will act as a rental agent to collect your tenant?s rent, pay repair bills, mortgages, strata payments/condo fees, property taxes, non-resident taxes, and any other payments that you instruct us to make. As a provincially licensed real estate company we maintain a trust account for clients funds in strict compliance with the Real Estate Services Act of British Columbia. A condition of licensing is a yearly audit for the Real Estate Council of British Columbia.

We generate monthly statements of account and send them by email or snail mail, along with copies of all receipts. We do not add handling charges to any disbursements. We also provide tax statements annually.

We are able to deal with clients no matter where in the world they are located. In fact, we manage properties for owners who reside on every continent except Antarctica. We communicate with clients all over the world on a daily basis.

Off shore owners of Canadian real estate may be required to remit non-resident tax to the Canadian government if they are deemed to be non-residents for income tax purposes. This status has nothing to do with immigration status. A Canadian citizen could be a non-resident for income tax purposes just as easily as a non-Canadian could.

It is a simple matter to comply with the Canadian tax code, but it is not easy. Compliance is very important. If, in the future, the property is disposed of the non-resident status of the seller will be noted.

Sellers who have not complied with the law while owning the property will face many obstacles and penalties. The way to handle this is to have a Canadian agent sign an undertaking to file and remit taxes on behalf of the non-resident owner. Coronet Realty Ltd. will do this.

The tax rate is 25%, but if the non-resident makes use of an agent he can reduce it to 25% of net rather than 25% of gross income. This has important implications for cash flow. Without an agent in Canada the investor with a before tax cash flow neutral property (the rents equal the costs) would have to inject an additional 25% of income from somewhere else to pay the CRA.

They would not recover that expense until they filed a tax return the following year. A negative cash flow property puts the non-resident without an agent in an even worse position. With an agent the tax bite is reduced to 25% of net. The net income of a cash flow neutral or cash flow negative property is zero, and 25% of zero is zero, so all that is done is paperwork.

Technical Writing in Ireland - The Next Big Thing? | Writing ...

Image for Technical Writing in Ireland Post

According to?Patrice Fanning, chief executive and founder of Technically Write IT, Ireland might be the next leader in technical writing. ?

For those looking at the market today, it seems that many countries are positioning themselves for this role, and perhaps Ireland brings up some good points for other countries to consider.

What Makes One Country The One with the ?Write? Stuff

Interestingly enough, there are a few things that Patrice raises as strongpoints for offshore technical writers based in Ireland:

  • Time zone location
  • Inherent communication skills
  • English speaking

These ideas do make a lot of sense to those who need technical writing services. ?Ideally, the time zone of the user of the documentation and the writer will correlate to create time-sensitive documents. ?If the time zones are too far apart, it can cause delays in getting the information out and obstacles in having teleconference meetings. ?At the same time, technology and coffee tend to allow technical writers from many time zones to work collaboratively ? provided the writers are willing to work on the employer?s time schedule.

Now, it does make sense that writers who are already good at communicating and collecting the right information will help to expedite the technical writing goals. ?How one can measure whether someone is a good communicator or not?that?s a little less concrete.

The focus on English speaking for technical writing does come up in documentation, but it?s unclear if this is too broad of a generalization. ?After all, not everyone speaks English and not everyone needs their documents in English.

Still, the statement from Patrice does make one wonder ? which country, if any, is positioned to become a leader in technical writing? ?And does it matter for the market as a whole?

Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson and the UFC: Can this relationship be saved?

Lately, Quinton Jackson has been complaining about how he doesn't want to be in the UFC any more, and it appears the feeling is mutual from the UFC. They have become the couple that everyone knows should break up. Inexplicably, they stay together and annoy everyone around them. It's time to break this down, women's magazine style.

Cagewriter asks, can this relationship be saved?

Jackson says:

"After I leave the UFC, I'm done with them! ... The UFC's just throwing me all these boring fighters, these game planners, these wrestlers. I'm the type of fighter who you should match up with people who want to fight excitingly. You know what I'm saying? Cuz I'm gonna be the type of fighter who puts butts in seats."

UFC president Dana White says:

"I'll have a conversation with 'Rampage' and think we're cool, and then I'll read other stuff," he said. "We've been good to everybody we've ever dealt with. We've never screwed anybody over, including 'Rampage.' And you want to talk about a guy that we went to bat for ? we've gone to bat for him many times. I feel like [expletive] (Derek) Jeter when it comes to 'Rampage.' If he's unhappy with us, doesn't like us and doesn't want to be with us anymore, then the feeling is mutual."

Cagewriter responds, NO. This relationship cannot be saved. Jackson is miserable and will not be quiet until he is free from the UFC, so UFC? Let him go. Give him a quick fight to finish out his contract, or just cut him. White says both sides don't want to work with each other any more. Why prolong the agony?

Not all (business) relationships are built to last. Tear this one down.

What Are Recommended Internet Security Suite Software? | Best ...

Making sure that you have installed the best internet security suite that is available today is one of the unwritten, and very important, rules that every PC user should follow. Just about everyone has heard the chilling stories about how computer viruses have caused havoc for a person?s computer, often causing them to lose valuable data. Even worse are the stories of the internet threats to computer security that have led to someone having their identity stolen. As technology advances at a rapid pace to bring the market greater functionality and usability, there are more and more people who are constantly trying to take advantage of technology to infect and intrude on the personal computers of individuals and companies alike. Because of this ongoing battle between the advances in technology and the bad guys trying to make the most of technology for their benefit, there is a constant need for internet security protection software. An online security suite of software is able to provide this precise kind of protection through a set of programs that are designed to work together to foil the numerous online security threats that are constantly cropping up. The most effective types of such computer internet security programs are able to keep abreast of all the current threats, such as spyware, adware, and viruses by automatically downloading updates and patches on a weekly or daily basis.Making sure that any security software is properly updating should be high on the list of anyone who wants to make the most of their online security protection. This means that even though the security suite may be programmed to automatically download and install updates, the computer user should still manually check to be sure these updates have occurred. This double check should be done on a regular basis, weekly at least and preferably each day. While software programs can help to protect your computer, it is ultimately the responsibility of the user to make sure the software is running properly.

When choosing the best antivirus and security software to protect your computer system, and ultimately to protect yourself and your family, you should consider several factors. While many of the internet safety software products claim that they have a complete package to protect your system against internet threats, you still need to check to be sure that some specific components are included in the package you choose. There are many programs to choose from, such as AVG Internet Security, McAfee Internet Security, Panda Internet Security, PC Cillin Internet Security, Norton Internet Security, Kaspersky Internet Security, Zonealarm Internet Security and Microsoft Internet Security, to name a few.First, and foremost, the software security suite you choose must have the capacity to scan for viruses, to block viruses with an anti-virus protection routine, and be able to execute removal of any viruses that have invaded your system. Viruses can range from simple programs that are designed to annoy all the way to programs that can completely wipe out a hard drive, causing the user to lose everything on the drive.A good online security suite should also provide effective protection against spyware and adware. in addition, it should offer protection against spam, should have a robust firewall, and provide an array of parental control options. Eventually, computer users running online security software will run into questions or problems with their software and because of this you should be sure to purchase software from a company that has a good reputation for quality customer service and one that gives their customers the option of receiving support via phone, live chat and email.

HTC launches kickstand-tastic One S cases, we go hands-on

Image

Kickstand lovers rejoice! Not content with jazzing up its One X flagship, HTC just sent us a set of cases made specifically for its lovely One S. These come in four colors -- gray, granita (red), navy blue and black -- the latter featuring a tweaked design with an integrated kickstand. Unlike most third-party products, build quality is top-notch -- the accessories use a precision-molded flexible plastic shell covered in a soft touch finish. The kickstand is made of a metal alloy and is spring-loaded, but blocks access to the micro-USB port when in use. While the cases protect the back and sides of the One S, the front remains exposed to potential damage. Availability is slated as "soon", but pricing is $24.99 for the plain model and $39.99 for the kickstand version. Enjoy the gallery below.
